Steel Structures

Steel structures, such as cranes, bridges, trusses and structures are everyday assets of modern life. The reason to choose steel among all metals is the strength and ease of production of steel. The difficulty with steel structures is that the steel is susceptible as it contacts with water vapors in the air. Steel structures in open air are inspected periodically. The main reason is to keep the structure in good condition for a long time period. The inspections consists the following methods:

Visual inspection is performed on welds, rivets & bolts by means of unaided visual tools e.g: human eye and means of aiding tools to increase sensitivity and accessibility e.g: welding gages, mirrors, magnifiers, borescopes etc. to evaluate corrosion, loose bolting elements, surface cracks, weld visual condition and more.
Radiography or Ultrasonic if permitted by the applicable standard to detect internal welding defects as cracks, lack of penetration, porosity, undercutting etc.
Magnetic Particle inspection on welds and other steel members to detect surface or slightly subsurface cracks.
Poisson's ratio Determination to evaluate the mechanical properties of the steel and fire damage.
